Piastri’s Stance on Contract Speculation

Oscar Piastri has addressed recent speculation linking Max Verstappen’s management team with talks at McLaren. The Australian driver conveyed his confidence in fulfilling his current contract with the team, stating he has received multiple reassurances regarding McLaren’s satisfaction with his performance. This comes amidst a period of heightened activity in the driver market, often referred to as ‘silly season’, which saw rumours of Verstappen potentially moving to McLaren resurface during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.

During a media day, Piastri commented that the discussions around Verstappen do not significantly impact him. He acknowledged Verstappen’s talent but reiterated his own contractual obligations and his contentment with his current team and situation. Piastri expressed his desire to continue the success the team has experienced in recent years.

Like his teammate Lando Norris, Piastri is committed to a multi-year deal with McLaren. He initially joined the team as a rookie in 2023 and signed an extension midway through that season, which keeps him with McLaren until at least the end of 2026. A further multi-year extension in 2025 means he is contracted until at least the end of 2028, indicating a long-term commitment.

McLaren’s Performance and Driver Confidence

Piastri had a strong campaign last season, finishing third in the standings and narrowly missing out on the Drivers’ Championship by 13 points to Norris. Together, the pair have contributed to McLaren’s most successful period since the 1990s, leading both CEO Zak Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella to publicly support their current driver line-up. Despite being surpassed at times by teams like Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull under new regulations, McLaren remains a frontrunner.

This season, Piastri has continued to demonstrate his capabilities, securing two podium finishes and consistently placing in the top five in the previous three Grand Prix events. He currently sits fourth in the Drivers’ Championship with 80 points after eight rounds, just one point ahead of Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The only drivers ahead of him this season are those who have won a Grand Prix: Kimi Antonelli, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton.

Looking ahead to the upcoming British Grand Prix, Piastri acknowledged the fluctuating performance across teams. He noted that while Mercedes presents a consistent challenge, other teams, including Ferrari and Red Bull, have shown varying levels of strength depending on the track and recent upgrades. Piastri believes McLaren should be near the front, aiming for podiums, though he admits the team is still working to find the final step needed to consistently challenge for wins.

Verstappen Speculation and Team Responses

The future of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has been a frequent topic of discussion throughout the season. Speculation intensified following reports that his long-time race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, is set to join McLaren in 2028. While Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, reports suggest his contract may include a clause allowing him to seek a new team if he is not within the top two of the Drivers’ Championship standings by the mid-year break in August. He is currently seventh in the standings, 52 points behind George Russell, who is in second place.

Both McLaren and Red Bull have attempted to downplay the speculation surrounding their driver line-ups. McLaren CEO Zak Brown stated ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix that he would be surprised if Norris or Piastri were to leave, citing their happiness with the team and their existing contracts. Brown also indicated that McLaren would be open to having Verstappen under certain unusual circumstances.

Red Bull Team Principal Laurent Mekies also addressed the rumours, affirming that Verstappen has expressed his desire to remain with Red Bull. Mekies emphasized that Verstappen’s happiness with the team is contingent on having a fast car, and that the team’s focus is on improving the car’s performance. He clarified that Verstappen’s future is not a primary concern for the team, as they are working together to find the right development path for the car.

Lando Norris also weighed in on the reports, suggesting that the interest from a four-time World Champion like Verstappen highlights McLaren’s growing appeal. Norris expressed excitement for his own future with McLaren, confirming his commitment for many more years, and noted that he and Piastri are working well together. The next round of the Formula 1 Championship, the British Grand Prix, will feature a sprint race and a grand prix this weekend at Silverstone, with the sprint race scheduled for Saturday, July 4.
