Verstappen to McLaren? F1’s ‘silly season’ is ramping up - Formula 1

The ongoing discussion surrounding Max Verstappen‘s future with Red Bull has intensified, particularly during the recent events at the Red Bull Ring. Despite holding a contract with the team until at least the end of 2028, the four-time World Champion remains a central figure in what is known as Formula 1‘s ‘silly season’.

Speculation about Verstappen‘s potential departure has been a recurring theme in the driver market. While he was linked with a move to Mercedes for the current year, he ultimately committed to competing for Red Bull in 2026. However, the current season has seen renewed questions regarding his long-term commitment.

Verstappen’s commitment and team performance

Laurent Mekies, a team boss at Red Bull, addressed questions about Verstappen‘s future ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix. Mekies stated that Verstappen has made it clear he wishes to continue with the team, but also acknowledged that the driver requires a fast car to be content. This sentiment highlights the critical link between team performance and driver satisfaction.

The team’s performance in Formula 1‘s new era of regulations has been a point of concern. After securing four consecutive world titles from 2021 to 2024, Verstappen narrowly missed out on the 2025 crown. Red Bull has experienced a challenging start to the 2026 season, currently sitting in fourth place in the Teams’ Championship.

Mekies further explained that Verstappen completely trusts the team to do everything possible, both in the short and long term, to ensure a return to success. He emphasised that on-track results are the only thing that truly matters, expressing hope that these results will improve rapidly.

Crucial upgrades and future discussions

In an effort to improve their performance, Red Bull brought a substantial upgrade package to Spielberg for the Austrian Grand Prix. Mekies described this as a crucial step to get closer to their competitors and contend for higher positions. He noted that while the upgrades are significant, they may require some time to fully integrate and work effectively.

When asked if these developments influence discussions with Verstappen, Mekies indicated that they do not. He explained that Verstappen understands the effort required for a Formula 1 team to close a performance gap. The team’s focus remains on continuous improvement, aiming to reduce the deficit to their rivals by a few tenths of a second, which would represent remarkable progress over the course of the season.

Mekies reiterated that the team is not asking Verstappen weekly about his intentions to stay. He highlighted Verstappen‘s active involvement in pushing the team and assisting in finding the correct development path for the car, including conducting extensive tests during practice sessions. For Red Bull, the primary objective is to restore the car to its desired level of performance.

The contract between Verstappen and Red Bull, which extends through 2028, reportedly includes performance-based clauses. These clauses could potentially allow him to terminate the agreement early and explore opportunities with other teams, adding another layer to the ongoing ‘silly season’ discussions.

The situation at the Red Bull Ring saw Max Verstappen, McLaren, Racing Bulls, and Esteban Ocon all mentioned in the context of driver market activity, indicating a busy period for team and driver movements in Formula 1.
