MSR unveil retro look for Townsville wildcard

Matt Stone Racing (MSR) has unveiled a retro livery for the wildcard Chevrolet Camaro that Aaron Seton will drive at the upcoming NTI Townsville 500. The design pays homage to the 1993 championship-winning car of his father, Glenn Seton, a two-time Australian Touring Car Champion. The event is scheduled to take place from July 10-12.

Seton’s participation in Townsville comes as a late change, stepping in for Cameron Crick, who withdrew due to minor health concerns. Crick’s focus is on recovery ahead of the Ryco Enduro Cup, where he is set to partner with Jack Le Brocq. Seton was already confirmed to drive a third MSR Camaro at the Repco Sprint Cup finale in Ipswich in August, making this an earlier-than-anticipated opportunity for him to gain additional Supercars race experience.

The 1993 title was a significant milestone for Glenn Seton, marking the first of his two championships and the inaugural title contested under the five-litre V8 formula that evolved into the current Repco Supercars Championship. The Seton family has a rich history in Australian motorsport, with Aaron’s grandfather, the late Barry ‘Bo’ Seton, having won the 1965 Bathurst 500. Aaron Seton has often used the number 30 throughout his career, a number closely associated with his father’s racing achievements.

Seton expressed his delight at the opportunity to run the retro livery. He stated that reviving his father’s 1993 championship-winning design is a special moment he will cherish. He also extended his gratitude to Lachlan Stinson and Superior Cranes for their support in making the livery possible. Superior Cranes serves as the primary backing for Seton’s #30 Camaro.

The Townsville circuit has previously been a successful venue for Seton. In 2023, he secured pole position and finished third in a Super2 round at Reid Park, driving an ex-MSR Commodore. He reflected on his past performance, noting that despite the track’s challenging nature, it has been favourable to him. Seton mentioned feeling prepared for the event, having been in preparation for the Ipswich round.

Team owner Matt Stone highlighted the team’s strong momentum heading into Townsville. He expressed excitement about fielding a three-car roster in North Queensland, with Seton joining full-time drivers Jack Le Brocq and Zach Bates. Stone praised the appearance of the #30 Superior Cranes Racing Camaro, describing the livery as a fantastic tribute to Australian motorsport history while incorporating a modern Supercars aesthetic. He also added that the team is eager to see Seton’s performance in his first wildcard appearance of the season.

Seton has maintained his racing sharpness by competing in GT4 Australia alongside MSR co-owner Jason Gomersall. This will provide him with valuable track time before he partners with Bates in the #10 Camaro at The Bend and Bathurst later in the season. His early involvement in Townsville offers crucial extra preparation ahead of his enduro co-drive with rookie Zach Bates. Seton’s connection to Bates dates back to his early days of car racing, with a shared family history in the sport.

The 26-car field in Townsville will also include fellow wildcard entrant Reuben Goodall, who will be driving a third Tickford Mustang. The team’s priority remains ensuring Cameron Crick has the necessary time and support to focus on his health. While disappointed by his absence in Townsville, MSR fully supports Crick’s decision and anticipates his return for the Enduros. The team is also enthusiastic about giving Seton this earlier opportunity, acknowledging his consistent performance with them over several years.

Seton emphasized that he does not want to set specific expectations for the event, instead focusing on performing his best, gaining experience, and enjoying the two wildcard rounds. He views this as an exceptional opportunity that does not come around frequently. Track action for the NTI Townsville 500 is scheduled to commence on Friday, July 10.
