A student pilot misjudged a landing at Whanganui Airport on May 5, 2026, resulting in minor damage to the aircraft. The pilot was practicing take-offs and landings during a solo flight.
The airplane sustained small amounts of damage and is currently being assessed. The student pilot will undergo remedial training to improve his propeller technique.
This incident reflects broader challenges faced by students in both aviation training and outdoor education. A recent caving tragedy claimed the life of Karnin Petera, a 15-year-old student, during a school trip to Abbey Caves. An unnamed teacher described his experience trying to save students during that incident, saying, “I was terrified.”
Financial hardship also impacts students’ experiences. In France, universities have started offering €1 meals to help address this issue. Reports indicate that 48% of students went without food for financial reasons, while 23% experienced this several times a month.
Philippe Baptiste noted that this meal initiative represents “a small internal revolution” aimed at alleviating financial stress among students. The government has promised €120 million to support the meal scheme by 2027.
