Roger Randle’s coaching appointment at Munster Rugby was canceled after a nearly 30-year-old rape allegation resurfaced. The decision came on May 1, 2026, following discussions between Randle and the club.
Randle was set to leave the Chiefs after the 2026 Super Rugby season to join Munster as attack coach. However, the resurfacing of a 1997 rape allegation, which he has denied, prompted a mutual agreement to cancel the appointment.
The allegations were from nearly three decades ago and had previously been dropped by the complainant. Randle expressed sadness over the situation, stating, “I am deeply saddened that unfounded allegations from nearly 30 years ago – allegations I have always denied – have resurfaced during this process and overshadowed what was a wonderful opportunity to contribute to Munster Rugby.”
Former players resigned from Munster’s Professional Game Committee following the announcement of Randle’s appointment. This indicates strong feelings within the club regarding the issue.
Clayton McMillan, who knows Randle well, said, “I believe he would have brought a real quality to the programme.” Errol Brain also praised Randle’s character, calling him “a man of mana, integrity, and honesty.”
Munster Rugby’s General Manager Ian Costello stated that reaching this conclusion was difficult but necessary. He emphasized that it was in the best interest of Randle, his family, and Munster Rugby.
Randle played 59 games for the Chiefs from 1998 to 2003 and has been a coach there since 2018. His experience in rugby coaching is significant.
