Auckland police are cracking down on informal bike rides due to safety concerns and previous incidents of dangerous behaviour. Police warn participants to follow road rules during these events.
Authorities will monitor the upcoming rides and take action against any anti-social behaviour. Riders must wear helmets and ride on the left-hand side of the road.
Previous events have seen riders blocking cars and intimidating the public. Police have noted four separate events planned in May, raising their concern over potential risks.
Key safety requirements:
- Riders need to wear helmets at all times.
- They must adhere to road rules that apply to cyclists just like motorists.
- Riders are encouraged to ride in single file when in a group.
Inspector Dave Christoffersen emphasized the importance of these safety messages. He stated, “Riders need to consider their behaviour and the risk they are posing to themselves and others.”
Event organisers are asked to help ensure participants follow the rules. Christoffersen added, “Organisers should assist riders in their group to abide by the rules and keep themselves and everyone else safe.” Police will take immediate action or follow up after events if rules are not followed.
