Simon Barnett returns to reality TV by competing in Celebrity Treasure Island. He aims to support the White Matter Brain Cancer Trust after the death of his wife, Jodi Barnett, in October 2023. Jodi battled brain cancer for nearly six years before her passing. Barnett has four daughters and five grandchildren, with two more expected by June 2026.
This is not Barnett’s first reality TV appearance. He was runner-up on Celebrity Treasure Island in 2004 and won Dancing with the Stars in 2015. His long career in New Zealand television spans over 40 years, including his time at More FM.
“I feel I can live again,” Barnett said. He emphasizes fitness as a way to cope with grief. His participation aims to raise awareness about brain cancer, a cause that hits close to home for him.
Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, a former Black Ferns winger, also competes on Celebrity Treasure Island. She and her wife, Renee, are expecting a child via a sperm donor. Woodman-Wickliffe is 34 years old and has a daughter named Kaia who follows her rugby career.
The show airs Monday through Wednesday at 7:30 PM on TVNZ 2 and TVNZ+. Fans are eager to see how both competitors perform. Each year, around 400 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with malignant brain tumors.
Barnett reflects on his life after Jodi’s death. “I prefer to look at it as moving forward rather than moving on,” he shared. His journey showcases resilience amid personal loss.
