Auckland FC has announced the departure of another key player, Louis Verstraete, just days before a pre-season match against Tottenham Hotspur. The club is also still in the process of appointing a new manager.
Louis Verstraete, a Belgian midfielder, is returning to his home country due to personal and family reasons. He joined Auckland FC for its inaugural season and was a consistent presence in the starting lineup. His physical play and high work rate established him as a dominant force on the field, quickly making him a favourite among fans.
Following the club’s recent championship-winning season, Verstraete was recognised with the club’s MVP award and was included in the PFA Team of the Season. He was a significant contributor during his two years with the team, helping them secure both the Premiers Plate and the Champions Trophy.
Verstraete expressed sadness about leaving but noted that some life circumstances are more important than football. He described being part of the club’s first game and winning two trophies as an unforgettable experience.
Terry McFlynn, Auckland FC Director of Football, acknowledged Verstraete’s impact, calling him a standout in midfield and a crucial part of the team’s success in its first two seasons. McFlynn stated that the club understands Verstraete’s family situation and wishes him well for the future, recognising his lasting contribution to the club’s history. The club received a transfer fee for his departure.
Player movements and budget adjustments
Verstraete’s departure is one of several since the championship win. Other fan favourites, Dan Hall and Guillermo May, have also left. Loan player Jake Girdwood-Reich, who Auckland FC had considered retaining, has signed with Motherwell FC in Scotland, joining former goalkeeper Alex Paulsen. Additionally, Jesse Randall has moved to Dundee United in Scotland and made his debut recently.
These player movements come as the club aims to reduce spending to comply with salary cap regulations. Auckland FC had been exempt from these regulations during its first two seasons.
Despite the departures, Auckland FC has made some new signings. All White Lauchlan Bayliss has joined the team after a successful season with the Newcastle Jets. Midfielders Cam Howeison and Felipe Gallegos have extended their contracts, as has goalkeeper Michael Woud.
From Auckland’s OFC Pro League side, defender Ronan Wynne and Norwegian midfielder Daniel Normann have been called up. Scholarship players Bailey Ferguson, Van Fitzharris, and Isa Prins have also been promoted to the first team.
Search for a new head coach
The club is still searching for a new manager to replace Steve Corica, who left in June to coach Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan’s J-League. The announcement of Verstraete’s departure comes just days before Auckland FC’s match against Tottenham Hotspur at Eden Park.
Nick Becker, Auckland FC’s Chief Executive, had previously indicated the club’s intention to have a new coach in place before this weekend’s game. According to reports, Terry McFlynn, the club’s director of football, stated last week that a preferred candidate had been identified and was awaiting approval from club chair Bill Foley. McFlynn mentioned that the club had interviewed candidates and believed they had found the right person to lead the team forward.
The match against Tottenham Hotspur is scheduled to be broadcast live on TVNZ+ and TVNZ 2.
