Violence erupted in Alice Springs following the arrest of Jefferson Lewis, accused of murdering five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby. The unrest began shortly after his arrest on May 1, 2026.

Kumanjayi Little Baby’s body was found south of Alice Springs on Thursday morning. This discovery triggered a significant police response. Lewis was taken to Alice Springs Hospital after his arrest, where a crowd gathered demanding “payback.”

The situation escalated quickly. Northern Territory Police reported that about 400 people gathered outside the hospital. Officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd as tensions rose.

Lewis was reportedly spotted wandering outside Charles Creek town camp before his arrest. He had just been released from prison prior to the alleged abduction and murder.

The unrest prompted authorities to fly Lewis to Darwin for safety concerns at around 3:30 PM. A post-mortem examination is expected to determine the cause and timing of Kumanjayi’s death.

Commissioner Martin Dole stated, “Our police officers were attacked at that time, as were the St John Ambulance crew that attended to assist.” Community members expressed their anger, with one saying, “She was an innocent little baby, so vulnerable – yet they are protecting him.”

The disappearance of Kumanjayi Little Baby sparked one of the Northern Territory’s largest investigations. The Indigenous community is deeply affected by this incident, highlighting ongoing issues related to violence and justice.
