A man was charged after an armed police operation in Coroglen, New Zealand, on April 30, 2026. The incident left patrons stranded at the nearby Coroglen Tavern.
The police operation began around 7pm after reports of a firearm sighting at a property. Officers deployed the Armed Offenders Squad and established a cordon around the area. Tactical options included the use of a drone and gas.
The man was taken into custody at about 3am. During the operation, two air rifles were recovered from the address. Multiple police vehicles and a helicopter were involved in the response.
Luke Findlay, part-owner of the Coroglen Tavern, described the scene outside. He noted, “There’s AOS up at the [property], and three police officers here [outside the tavern] and cops either side of the Whitianga and Coroglen sides of the [State Highway 25] highway … and the [police] helicopter’s going around.”
Findlay felt safe while waiting at the tavern during the police activity. He said, “We’re just chilling out waiting.” He understood that a person with a gun had been seen on the driveway of the property.
The man is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on a charge of presenting a firearm or restricted weapon. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.
