The Kansas City Chiefs have released the initial renderings for their new domed stadium, which is projected to open in 2031. This facility, estimated to cost $3 billion, will be fully enclosed and feature translucent panels on its ceiling. The design incorporates a symmetrical and curved exterior, while also paying tribute to Arrowhead Stadium, the team’s home since 1972. The new stadium is designed to accommodate approximately 70,000 people and will include a scalloped upper deck in the end zones.
The decision to move from Arrowhead Stadium was announced in late December. The new stadium will be constructed in Kansas City, Kansas, situated near Kansas Speedway and a retail district known as The Legends. This area is also home to Sporting Park, the venue for MLS club Sporting Kansas City, and a minor league baseball stadium. Kansas lawmakers approved the issuance of over $2.4 billion in bonds, covering about 60% of the total cost for the stadium, a new training facility, and associated retail and entertainment spaces.
New Practice Facility and Headquarters
In a separate development, the Chiefs also announced the selection of Burns & McDonnell as the owner’s representative for their new practice facility and headquarters project in Olathe, Kansas. This announcement, made on Thursday, marks a significant step for the club’s future day-to-day operations. The new practice facility and headquarters, along with an associated mixed-use development, are valued at $300 million.
The new facilities will be located on approximately 155 acres near the intersection of College Boulevard and Ridgeview Road in Olathe. These facilities are anticipated to be operational before the 2031 football season. Burns & McDonnell, a local and employee-owned firm, will collaborate with CAA ICON to act as the franchise’s advisor throughout the development of these new team facilities, which will support both business and football operations.
Matt Kenny, the Chiefs‘ Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, expressed enthusiasm for Burns & McDonnell joining the project team. He highlighted the firm’s combination of local knowledge and global experience as beneficial for navigating the design and construction phases of what is described as a unique year-round home for the team and staff.
The role of Burns & McDonnell will involve providing independent oversight and experienced leadership, guiding the process from early planning through construction and occupancy. They will coordinate with various stakeholders, including architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants, to ensure project execution aligns with budget and schedule objectives. Their responsibilities also include managing risk and ensuring the facility meets the high standards expected by the Chiefs organisation.
