“My dream was to be an F1 driver, but my goal was to be a racing driver. I just wanted to race cars to make a living,” Oscar Piastri said. The Australian driver reflected on his path to Formula 1 during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, where he finished seventh in qualifying after winning the Sprint race.
Piastri’s journey began with a realistic mindset. He separated his dream of racing in F1 from tangible career goals. At age 14, he doubted he would become an F1 driver. Instead, his aspiration was simply to be a professional racing driver.
He started seeing F1 as a realistic possibility after arriving at Formula 2. Piastri explained that he did not dare to turn his dream into a goal until he began defending the title in F2. “Even if I don’t make it to F1, I’m just going to get as far as I can up the junior ladder,” he added.
As he got closer to achieving his dream, Piastri realized he could compete for a place on the grid. This shift in perspective came with significant achievements in lower racing series. His performance has drawn attention and highlighted the potential for future success.
McLaren faced challenges in Miami Qualifying despite their earlier Sprint race victory. The team continues to work on upgrades that may improve performance moving forward.
