Vaughan Mabee, a celebrated chef known for his Michelin star and role as a judge on Masterchef NZ, resigned from Amisfield on February 19, 2026. His resignation follows multiple complaints about inappropriate behaviour, including allegations of bullying and sexist comments.
Mabee worked at Amisfield for 15 years. During that time, he faced at least four formal complaints regarding his conduct. The complaints included accusations of drinking and drug use while on the job. A formal complaint was first lodged against him in 2016, with another following in 2021.
In 2017, Mabee was found guilty of drink-driving. Despite these issues, he was named one of the World’s Top 100 Chefs in 2023. This recognition came as he was also serving as a judge on Masterchef NZ.
Following more recent complaints regarding Mabee’s conduct, he was removed from the workplace while an independent investigation was conducted. John Darby, an official at Amisfield, stated that this action was necessary to address the concerns raised.
Mabee issued a public apology for his actions towards former staff. He said, “I unreservedly apologise to my former staff and colleagues at work for my inappropriate behaviour to them or any inconsiderate comments made.” He expressed his love and respect for his team, insisting he meant no harm.
TVNZ is now considering removing Mabee from the show Taste of Art. The network has not confirmed any timeline for this decision. However, the ongoing independent investigation may influence their final ruling.
The situation highlights significant concerns within the hospitality industry regarding workplace conduct. As culinary competitions gain popularity, issues like these can impact not just individuals but also the reputation of establishments involved.
